Psalms The Prayer Book of the Bible was written by Dietrich Bonhoeffer before he was imprisoned. This short book describes different themes found in the Psalms and gives some general background on the Psalms.
This book could easily be read in one to two hours, even for slow readers. However, it would be best to meditate on the words while reading. It could serve as devotional thoughts in the morning if read with a Psalm. This book could also be read in conjunction with a Bible so when a Psalm or Bible verse is mentioned, those could be read to better understand the chapter. It could also be beneficial to read and then reread each chapter to better understand what is said.
Psalms The Prayer Book of the Bible talks about prayer as well. It rightly points to Jesus being the reason we can pray. It also has a beautiful description of prayer which reminds us we are children of God. “The child learns to speak because his father speaks to him. He learns the speech of his father. So we learn to speak to God because God has spoken to us and speaks to us. By means of the speech of the Father in heaven his children learn to speak with him. Repeating God’s own words after him, we begin to pray to him.” This beautiful, tangible description of prayer helps us understand what prayer is and points out why the Psalms and Lord’s Prayer are essential to the Christian’s life.
This book has little room for fluff and contains good information. It could be revisited every year or two to serve as a reminder about the Psalms and prayer. Make a little time to read Psalms The Prayer Book of the Bible written by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and printed by Augsburg Fortress. It’s a quick and beneficial read.
