A resource pastor and I have been enjoying lately is Luther’s Small Catechism for Kids. This is a book recently released by CPH and one of the few qualms we have with it is the “for kids.” It’s a great resource that could be used in any home.
We loved that most of the sections contain bullet points and the sections can easily be read or referenced. There is a short section that helps the reader understand the part of the catechism that is being covered in that section. There are also Biblical illustrations for the different sections. There is a life application section, song, memory verse, and prayer.
I have been using this as a devotional material with my kids. Don’t get me wrong, they mostly ignore what I’m saying or try to get me to do something else, but the sections are short enough that I can stop frequently and answer their unrelated questions or shrieks. When my kids get older, I think it is written that they should be able to understand the concepts at a young age. I know Pastor has also used it for a reference in his catechism book club.
There is also a glossary in the back with many “church” words. It’s useful to look at those definitions so that when the words come up in the Bible or the catechism, parents can know how to explain what the word or concept is. There is also a reference to the church year calendar, Luther’s seal, and Luther’s morning and evening prayers. The book also has beautiful illustrations.
We do have a few of these books in the Sunday School classrooms if any adults would like to look at them. We think these are a great resource or reference for any home and family. It can be used as quick devotional materials or a starting point to teaching the catechism in your home. It could also be a good Reformation Day gift for someone. This resource is available here.
